A while ago I asked for options to dull down my chrome bits a little...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Well, I ended up using something similar to plastidip called protectdip. I think it’s really for adding tint to lights (or, if you get the clear one, for coating areas that might get stone chips), but it worked OK. Here’s the thing—it doesn’t have much shine. I was trying for a “smoked chrome” look rather than what I actually did get (before/after below, I only have done the tailgate handle so far). I would imagine clearcoating it would fix this. So, two part question:
1. What clearcoat would you use?
2. It’s starting to rub off, so I have to do it again—is there any particular clearcoat that would give it a harder shell so that it didn’t rub off so easily, but still be removable if I ever decided to change it?
First one is my truck, second one, because I couldn't find a "before" pic, is one in the same colour and trim level.

Plastidip has its own gloss that you spray on after the colored layers to give it as much or as little shine as you want. So you have the option of leaving a matte finish, or some gloss, or lots of gloss, depending on how much you spray on. I have no idea if it’s compatible with what you used.
As for making it stick, the best advice I can give is good prep, start with a thin coat, then lay it on as thick as you can without runs.
It worked for my BRZ’s stock wheels.

how many cans in total did you use to get that colour & finish on the 4 wheels?

4 cans of Vintage Gold, plus 1 can of clearcoat.

do you not need to do any white/black base coat anymore?

Don’t do it... it looks like shit.
That’s my advice

Is there something specific that happens to make it look like shit? Because if it's just a matter of out tastes differing, well...

I’m not sure if they recommend it or not. I didn’t use any, and I got a consistent color on my wheels despite the dark and silver colors they have stock.

I used almost a can of Plastidip per wheel on my Mustang, that was about 5-6 coats. I cleaned and waxed the wheels b4 spraying. Been on now for about 2 yrs with only minor touch ups.

I have the grainy look, the lack of sheen, and the cheap look it gives off as an effect of those 2 characteristics.
Yeah, it’s convenient (easy to remove), but that’s not worth it looking like ass (the kinds I don’t like... trust me, I’m an Ass Man) to me

That's basically what I'm asking for, is a way to defeat those characteristics. If there isn't, well... I've tried it out at least and I like the direction it's going. Next I'll use actual paint.

Why not vinyl in that case?
